Explore the world of Abstract Expressionism in this intensive workshop that will focus on the artists Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns. Through hands-on experience, participants will delve into this energetic and expressive art movement, learning to create process-oriented works of art inspired by these influential artists.

  • Day 1: Students will develop a series of observational drawings from a still life set up. Students will also explore and discuss the use of "things the mind already knows" (Jasper Johns) such as text, signs, flags, common objects and numbers in Abstract Expressionist art.
  • Day 2: During this session, students will experiment with gestural drawing and painting techniques to prepare the foundation of their final work on canvas for this program. They will learn about colour theory, the use of patterns, basic printmaking methods including how to make stencils.
  • Day 3: Using the materials developed over the previous two days, students will delve into the world of collage and printmaking while drawing inspiration from pre-existing imagery used by the Abstract Expressionists. Through this exploration, they will work on developing their canvas to create a final mixed media artwork that reflects their own artistic vision.

Under the guidance of our lead teen tutor, Elsie Preston, students aged 11-15 will have the opportunity to enhance their expressionist art-making skills in this workshop. The focus will be on developing an informed artwork on canvas that reflects the principles of Abstract Expressionism. The goal of the workshop is to empower participants to create art with ease and an intuitive approach, fostering their creativity and artistic development over time.
