Mastering Photorealism in Oils

Ben Howe is recognized as one of Australia’s leading painters of photo-realism, acclaimed for his exceptional body of work which is collected and exhibited regularly. With a deep dedication to his craft, Ben offers students the chance to be mentored by an artist who embodies the technical values of precise image-making using the traditional medium of oil paints.

This course is designed for students with a foundation in observational painting, aiming to refine their skills in realism. Participants will explore:

• Brush techniques and strokes
• Colour theory and values
• Capturing light and shadow
• Developing underpaintings
• Image transfer methods
• Detail-oriented painting
• Applying finishing glazes
• Canvas preparation

This course welcomes students with a background in foundational courses or experience in observational painting in oils or acrylics. A particular interest in photorealistic painting is the key requirement for enrollment.

Please be aware that this is a multi-level course, allowing advanced students who have previously studied with Ben the opportunity to focus on individual projects. New students will follow a structured series of projects designed to enhance their skills and understanding of photorealism.
